Solitary Confusion

An Ode to Vulnerability

Martine Goulmy

A single white chrysanthemum lies amidst melting ice, exposed to the moment when transience becomes visible. The ice, a symbol of sweetness and the preservation of time, gradually loses its grip, revealing the flower with its delicate petals and green stem. The chrysanthemum, rich in meaning—symbolizing happiness, honesty and health—radiates a quiet purity in this setting. The simplicity of this composition invites reflection. The melting ice symbolizes the elusive nature of time and the beauty found in the process of letting go. Every detail, from the texture of the petals to the shimmering glints of the ice, highlights both the fragility and the strength of nature. This image is part of a series of six works in which I explore the interaction between ice and chrysanthemums. Each piece in the series tells its own story of stillness, transformation and the duality between holding on and letting go. Discover the full collection and be inspired by the hidden power of simplicity and impermanence.

My passion for photography began at a young age. At twelve, my parents gave me my first camera, and that gift marked the start of a lifelong journey. With that camera in hand, I discovered how to capture the world around me and tell my own stories. Since then, my camera has been my constant companion, and I have continuously refined my perspective. I am self-taught and have developed my own style by experimenting and following my curiosity.
