Confusion in ice

A Frozen Story

Martine Goulmy

In this artwork, a small white chrysanthemum is encased in a shell of ice. Ice, a symbol of sweetness and joy, contrasts here with the symbolism of the chrysanthemum, which represents happiness, friendship, health and honesty. In Japan, the chrysanthemum also stands for a long and happy life, while the yellow variety symbolizes immortality. This white chrysanthemum, with its subtle hue, radiates purity and fragility, bringing together these profound meanings. The freezing of this flower goes beyond a visual experiment; it is an exploration of the tension between transience and eternity. The ice protects the flower and preserves its beauty, yet at the same time emphasizes its vulnerability. It is a reflection on how we try to hold on to meaning and emotion in moments that inevitably slip away. This image is part of a series of six works, each offering a unique perspective on the interplay of time, nature, and symbolism. Every piece in this series is created with care and dedication, revealing the deeper layers of these themes and inviting the viewer to reflect. Discover the full series and be inspired by the hidden stories in every detail.

My passion for photography began at a young age. At twelve, my parents gave me my first camera, and that gift marked the start of a lifelong journey. With that camera in hand, I discovered how to capture the world around me and tell my own stories. Since then, my camera has been my constant companion, and I have continuously refined my perspective. I am self-taught and have developed my own style by experimenting and following my curiosity.
