Double Confusion

A Frozen Dialogue

Martine Goulmy

In this artwork, two small white chrysanthemums come together, caught in an icy embrace. The ice, a symbol of sweetness and joy, seems to both protect and silence the flowers. The chrysanthemum, a flower rich in meaning worldwide, stands for happiness, friendship, health, and honesty. In Japan, the chrysanthemum represents a long and happy life, while its serene white tones here evoke a sense of purity and vulnerability. The freezing process adds a deeper layer of meaning. The ice captures not only the physical form but also time itself, turning a moment of transformation into something eternal. The air bubbles and textures within the ice introduce a playful and dynamic element to this fragile composition, as if the flowers are engaged in a quiet dialogue. This piece is part of a series of six works in which I explore the tension between transience and immortality. Each artwork in this series invites reflection on the beauty of nature, the passing of time and the symbolic meanings we attach to it. Be inspired by the stories hidden within the ice and discover the full series, where each image offers a new perspective.

My passion for photography began at a young age. At twelve, my parents gave me my first camera, and that gift marked the start of a lifelong journey. With that camera in hand, I discovered how to capture the world around me and tell my own stories. Since then, my camera has been my constant companion, and I have continuously refined my perspective. I am self-taught and have developed my own style by experimenting and following my curiosity.
