Confusion

A Moment of Stillness

Martine Goulmy

A single white chrysanthemum, frozen in clear ice, reveals a quiet, timeless beauty. The ice, symbolizing sweetness and joy, gently envelops the flower, while highlighting its softness and strength. The chrysanthemum, a flower rich in deeper meaning, stands for happiness, friendship, health and honesty. In Japan, it is associated with a long and happy life and its pure white color radiates serenity and vulnerability. This work is part of a series of six images in which I explore the tension between transience and permanence. The freezing of the chrysanthemum was a deliberate choice — not only to capture its physical beauty, but also to symbolize frozen time and the fleeting nature of the moment. The air bubbles trapped in the ice enhance this duality and add a dynamic element to the seemingly still scene. This series invites reflection and appreciation of nature in its most tranquil form. Discover the full collection and let yourself be carried away by the stories hidden in every detail of the frozen chrysanthemums.

My passion for photography began at a young age. At twelve, my parents gave me my first camera, and that gift marked the start of a lifelong journey. With that camera in hand, I discovered how to capture the world around me and tell my own stories. Since then, my camera has been my constant companion, and I have continuously refined my perspective. I am self-taught and have developed my own style by experimenting and following my curiosity.
